Reading a brochure
How to read an admissions brochure
The 招生简章, the admissions brochure, is where a university states who it will take and how. The national rules say what it has to make public. Use the list below as a reading checklist.
Why the brochure is the document that counts
A university draws up and publishes its own brochure for international students and recruits by the conditions and procedure written in it. It must also make its basic information, its teaching, its brochure and its management and service rules open to international students.
Find the student category
Check which category the programme belongs to: a degree category (junior college, bachelor's, master's, doctoral) or a non-degree one (preparatory student, advanced student, research scholar). It decides what certificate you finish with.
Find the teaching language
Look for whether the programme is taught in Chinese or in a foreign language, and what level the university asks for. A thesis for a degree taught in a foreign language may be written in that language, with an abstract in Chinese.
Find the fee and refund rules
A university must publish its fee items and standards for international students, and its refund rules for withdrawal and transfer. Fees and refunds are priced in RMB. If a brochure does not show them, ask the school where they are published.
Find the insurance and health lines
Insurance is compulsory for all international students, and a student who does not buy it as required is not admitted or not registered. At enrolment the school has the physical examination record confirmed or arranges an examination.
What a brochure cannot change
Visa classes and the residence permit are set by law, not by the school: X1 or X2 by study period, and 30 days after entry to apply for a residence permit where the visa requires one. Transfers need the consent of the school that first admitted you.
