A foreign student who does not hold Chinese nationality under the Nationality Law and is being educated at a school in China.
A student in degree education: junior college, bachelor's, master's or doctoral.

A Chinese Government Scholarship category for holders of a high school diploma or higher, under 45.
A Chinese Government Scholarship category for holders of a master's degree, or associate professors and above, under 50.
The body that takes scholarship applications and recommends candidates. Which one depends on the programme: for the Bilateral Program it is the dispatching authority of the applicant's home country; for the University Program it is the Chinese university.
A pre-admission notice from a university's international admissions department, or an invitation letter from the school or a professor. All Chinese Government Scholarship applicants must provide one.
China Scholastic Competency Assessment. Bachelor's applicants for the Chinese Government Scholarship must take it and upload a valid score report. Its official website is www.csca.cn.
The Chinese proficiency test whose score reports the scholarship guide asks for: Level 3 for Chinese-taught scholar programmes and Level 4 for Chinese-taught master's and doctoral programmes.
A course that, together with Chinese, is compulsory for international students in degree education.
The visa for persons who apply for long-term study in China, meaning more than 180 days.
The visa for persons who apply for short-term study in China, meaning 180 days or fewer.
Study at a school in China for 180 days or fewer is short-term; more than 180 days is long-term.
The permit a student applies for within 30 days of entry where the study visa says one is needed.

The Visa Application for Study in China form used for self-funded students, handled by the university that admitted them.
The health record a student has confirmed at enrolment. The scholarship guide asks for a photocopy from applicants who will study for more than six months; results are valid for six months.

Schools run a full-coverage insurance system; international students must insure as national rules and the school require.
International students may take part in work-study activities during their studies but may not take employment, do business or engage in other profit-making activities.
For a student under 18 whose parents do not live in China, a foreigner or Chinese citizen living in China whom the parents formally entrust.
